Today Layla moved to a new big paddock away from her daughter Shadow. It was time to cut the cord
once and for all. Shadow can still sort of see her mom across the bridge. Layla seems truly happy
about the move. Shes in a far more interesting area with horses her own age. She seems to be
forming a bond with Pippin, another horse similar to layla in dominance. Maybe they can room
together, time will tell.
Over the weekend, Laylas teats swelled up. She appeared to have mastitis. Which isn't a huge
surprise, her milk has never fully dried up. I am guessing she had a baby almost every year of her
wild life, so realistically shes could have had somewhere between 10 to 15 babies total. I really saw
her mastitis as a physical way of signifying that enough is enough. Time to let go of being a full time
mommy and move onto new more adult ventures. Like playing with other horses and having mare
fights thur the fence.
Her swollen teats responded well to cold hosing, Arnica, apis mel and a little bit of bute for the pain.
She looked close to normal today. Hoping she be all the way back to normal by tomorrow. I think the
move helped too.

Wow, two years since an update, Kind of amazing how time flies. In 2010 Layla was adopted by my
friend and boarder Mary Maguire. Mary boards Layla here at the ranch with her other two horses. To
say Layla has progressed is kind of an understatement. She went from being a horse who wasn't
entirely sure she wanted to live a domestic life to a horse who lives the ultimate domestic life. She
spends her days with her herd mates, two chestnut TB mares. Shes not the top horse in her herd or
the bottom, she enjoys her middle status, gets plenty to eat and is allowed by the top mare to stand
in the shelter with her when it rains.
Layla has also become a very social creature. When her paddock gate is opened, she roams the isle
ways visiting with other horses and the people who inhabit the ranch as well. She is interested in
her life now. Two weeks ago, Layla went on her first real domestic horse adventure, she went to the
beach for the first time, with a group of other horses. Below are some pics.
